Biography

Prof Sindile Ngubane is a distinguished academic and advocate for equitable access to education, with a focus on the transformative potential of open and distance e-learning. She currently serves as the Advocacy and Knowledge Generation and Dissemination Programme Director at the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE), where she leads efforts to promote the use of open and distance learning to improve educational access across Africa.

Prof Ngubane is also a National Research Foundation C2 rated researcher, specializing in digital access for students and employees with disabilities, incarcerated students, and women in open and distance learning (ODL) contexts. Her work in these areas includes research, community engagement, and mentorship, aimed at ensuring that marginalized groups have equal opportunities to succeed in educational environments.

In addition to her role at ACDE, Prof Ngubane heads the Institute for Open and Distance Learning at the University of South Africa (Unisa), where she oversees ODL research, capacity building, and stakeholder relationships. She is deeply involved in the advancement of ODL both within Unisa and in broader educational contexts.

Prof Ngubane's leadership extends beyond her institutional roles. She is a former president of the Distance Education Associations in Southern Africa (DEASA), deputy president of the Unisa Women’s Forum, and deputy director at the Advocacy and Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities. Her contributions to curriculum transformation further emphasize her commitment to creating inclusive educational systems that cater to diverse learners.
