Biography

Mark West works in UNESCO’s Education Sector where he researches and writes about the future of education with a special focus on technology.

He develops projects and publications that help countries understand opportunities and risks for education in an age of rapid technological, social and environmental change. 

Mark is the UNESCO lead for the UNESCO-UNICEF Gateways to Public Digital Learning Initiative which helps countries develop digital commons to support education.

Mark has authored numerous publications for UNESCO, including ‘An Ed-Tech Tragedy?' (2023); 'I’d Blush if I Could' (2019), and 'Reading in the Mobile Era' (2014). He has also led the development of institutional and normative guidance about technology and education, most recently, the UNESCO-UNICEF-ITU Charter on Public Digital Learning (2026) and the Rewired Declaration (2022).

Mark is a graduate of Stanford University and a former Fulbright Fellow.
