Biography

Dr Menghestab Haile is a British national of Ethiopian descent, committed to Africa’s transformation through collaboration among nations, institutions, and development partners. With over 30 years of experience spanning academia, government, international organisations, and public-private partnerships, he is a globally recognised expert in food security, climate resilience, geospatial solutions, and skills development. Holding a PhD in Meteorology from the University of Reading, UK, he has led transformative initiatives in evidence-based policymaking, digital education, and sustainable rural development across Africa.

Dr Haile believes that Africa has the natural wealth and youthful energy to play a significant global role. However, unlocking this potential requires education, skills development, and strategic policy engagement. By equipping young people with digital literacy and employment opportunities, Africa can sustainably manage its resources, enhance food security, mitigate conflicts, and build environmental resilience. His work focuses on aligning development efforts with government priorities to create lasting impact.

As a Senior Adviser to The Digital School (UAE), Dr Haile plays a leading role in advancing digital education and capacity building across Africa. He advocates for technology-driven learning solutions, infrastructure development, and policy engagement to enhance education systems. His work includes real-world case studies and collaboration with policymakers to design strategies that maximise the impact of digital education on socio-economic development.

Previously, as the Regional Director for Southern Africa at the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Dr Haile worked closely with Heads of State, Ministers, development partners, and regional institutions to build strategic partnerships for rural transformation and economic resilience. He led efforts to combat food insecurity, develop early warning systems, and establish geospatial data platforms for improved decision-making. His leadership in launching solar-powered energy hubs has provided clean energy, digital education, and economic opportunities in underserved communities, demonstrating the effectiveness of holistic development approaches.

Dr Haile has been instrumental in innovative financing, forging public-private partnerships, and investing in evidence generation to support climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture, and food security. He has played a critical role in developing national geospatial platforms, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and addressing land degradation and biodiversity conservation.

Currently, Dr Haile also serves as an Adviser to the Global Skilled Academies of the UAE, focusing on capacity building, public-private collaboration, and South-South cooperation. His work fosters sustainable solutions for digital education, youth employment, and women’s empowerment, ensuring that Africa’s development agenda aligns with national and regional government priorities.

With an extensive network across government, academia, the private sector, and multilateral institutions, Dr Haile has successfully engaged with the African Union (AU), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), African Development Bank (AfDB), AfreximBank, Southern African Development Community (SADC), AUDA-NEPAD, and numerous Heads of Governments, Ministers, and partner governments to advance Africa’s development agenda. His expertise in geospatial analytics, technology-driven education, and evidence-based policymaking continues to shape initiatives that drive Africa’s sustainable development and digital transformation.
