Biography

Honourable Dr F. M. Shava holds a PhD in International Relations and Diplomacy from Commonwealth University, a Master of Philosophy in Parasitology and a Master of Science in Nematology from Imperial College, University of London, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Zambia. He is a scientist by training.

As an elected official of the ruling party, Honourable Shava has held several ministerial positions over the years. From 1981 to 1983, he served as Minister of Manpower Planning and Development, followed by his role as Minister of Labour, Manpower Planning and Development from 1984 to 1987. In 1987, he was appointed Minister of State for Political Affairs. More recently, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade from 2021 to 2024, and since 2024, he has been serving as Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development.

In the diplomatic service, Honourable Shava served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China from 2007 to 2014, and as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2014 to 2021. During his tenure at the United Nations, he held several leadership roles, including Chair of the SADC Group at the United Nations from 2014 to 2015, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) from 2016 to 2017, Vice President of the Seventy-Second Session of the United Nations General Assembly from 2017 to 2018, and Vice President of the Seventy-Fourth Session of the United Nations General Assembly from 2019 to 2020.

In addition to his public service, he has held non-executive board memberships in a number of companies, reflecting his experience as a strategic leader in both public and corporate sectors.
