Biography
Dr Asifa P. Nanyaro from Tanzania, born on March 21, 1952, is a distinguished engineer and academic leader. He has been the Executive Director and fellow of the Tanzania Academy of Sciences (TAAS) since 2012. A registered engineer, Dr. Nanyaro holds a Bachelor of Applied Science, Masters of Applied Science, and Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from the University of Toronto, Canada.
His research expertise lies in aircraft crash dynamics, the strength of space vehicle composites, and other natural materials. Dr. Nanyaro plays a significant role in managing TAAS, coordinating publications, and organizing workshops that provide evidence-based advice to the Tanzanian government and other stakeholders.
He has an extensive background in leadership, having served as the Director General of the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO) from 1996 to 2012. He was also a member of the East Africa Science and Technology Commission Governing Board until 2023. In addition to his academic and research contributions, Dr. Nanyaro has served as a member of the Commission for Science and Technology of Tanzania and the National Business Council. He is a retired Colonel, reflecting his wide-ranging influence in both military and scientific domains.
