Alexandros Makarigakis

Biography

With over 27 years of international experience in environmental sciences, Dr Alexandros Makarigakis has dedicated himself to natural resources management, specialising in water and environment issues. His two-decade tenure at UNESCO included key roles such as Chief of the Disaster Risk Reduction Unit and Global Coordinator of UNESCO’s Water for Human Settlements Programme. Dr Makarigakis has represented UNESCO in Uzbekistan, Ethiopia, and the African Union, shaping policies and initiatives related to the Organization’s work in Education, Sciences and Culture.

Beyond UNESCO, Dr Makarigakis has contributed significantly to the field through university lecturing and pioneering work in bioremediation and municipal water purification. His expertise includes designing innovative treatment systems and mathematical modelling for scale-up, along with groundwater remediation and waste management.

As of July 2023, Dr Makarigakis serves as Director and Representative a.i. of UNESCO’s Multisectoral Regional Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi, driving impactful change in the region.

Educationally, Dr Makarigakis holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, complemented by diplomas in Environmental Impact Assessment and Total Quality Management. He is proficient in various analytical techniques and software, contributing to his role as a thought leader in the field. 

Dr Makarigakis is a proud member of esteemed organisations like the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Technical Chamber of Greece, dedicated to advancing environmental sciences and sustainable development globally.
