Biography

Professor Karen Ferreira-Meyers is a distinguished expert in blended and e-learning, with over two decades of experience transforming distance education in Southern Africa. Based at the University of Eswatini's Institute of Distance Education (IDE), she has been instrumental in pioneering digital learning initiatives across the region. Her expertise in online pedagogy began developing in the early 2000s when she recognized the potential of learning management systems to enhance distance education. She became an early adopter and advocate of Moodle, implementing it at IDE and training numerous educators across Southern Africa in its effective use. Her approach emphasizes that successful online learning requires more than technology—it demands careful instructional design, authentic assessment strategies, and meaningful learner engagement. Professor Ferreira-Meyers has designed and facilitated professional development programs that have reached thousands of educators. Her Certificate in Online Teaching for Educators (COTE) program, developed with Commonwealth of Learning support, has equipped teachers across Africa with essential digital teaching competencies. She has delivered workshops and training sessions throughout the continent, from Gabon to Tanzania, consistently emphasizing practical, context-appropriate approaches to blended learning. Her recent work has focused on artificial intelligence in education, where she developed a fully online six-week course on AI integration in the classroom for the University of Eswatini's Artificial Intelligence Academy. She facilitates this module multiple times annually, helping educators understand both the opportunities and ethical considerations of AI tools. As a prolific researcher, she has published extensively on e-learning, online facilitation, authentic online assessment, and the use of technologies like WhatsApp in language teaching. Her work addresses the unique challenges of African contexts, including infrastructure limitations and the need for culturally responsive digital pedagogy. She has presented at numerous international conferences, sharing insights on transitioning from face-to-face to online teaching, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when her expertise became crucial.
